Toshiba Satellite U305

The Satellite U305 is a bit chunkier than other laptops with 13.3 inch displays, such as the Apple MacBook, which isnt exactly what wed call svelte, and the Sony VAIO SZ. Thickness aside, the Toshiba is rather compact and, with a 5 pound weight (including the extended life battery), easy to carry. With its rounded edges, reflective blue black exterior, and silver interior.

The Satellite U305 could be mistaken for an HP Pavilion from afar, if not for the giant silver Toshiba logo emblazoned in 0.75 inch letters across the laptops lid and the brightly glowing Satellite logo on the left side of the laptops front edge. We like the Satellite U305s design, but we didnt like feeling like we were sitting behind a Toshiba billboard every time we booted up.

The 13.3 inch wide screen display has a decent 1,280x800 native resolution.Toshiba outfits the screen with its TruBrite technology for a brighter, more vibrant image. Unlike other extra bright laptop displays weve seen, the Satellite U305s screen doesnt result in overly distracting reflections and glare. Movies look great on it, though youll want to use headphones because the integrated stereo speakers located just below the display produce muddled, awful sound.

The Satellite U305 includes Toshibas redesigned keyboard with both a right side Control key and Windows key in their proper positions (previous Toshiba keyboards had omitted the former and moved the latter to the upper right side). The keyboard flexes a little, but that didnt seem to affect our typing in fact, typing on the Satellite U305 was remarkably comfortable and the spacious keyboard minimized typos.

The laptops touch pad, though small, was largely functional. In the absence of a touch pad on or off button, we appreciate that the touch surface is recessed, which prevents you from accidentally grazing the touch pad and misplacing the cursor while typing. The mouse buttons are tiny not much wider than the width of our thumb in order to accommodate a fingerprint reader between them.

Given that the print reader does not double as a scroll button, wed rather it be located elsewhere on the keyboard deck so we could have larger mouse buttons. Above the keyboard sit basic media controls (play or pause, stop, track forward, and track back) as well as buttons to launch the media player and your default Web browser. A volume wheel on the left side and a Wi-Fi on or off switch on the front edge round out the features.

While other models in the Vaio FW270 series feature a silver lid, this retail version offers a matte finish, yet pearlescent, white lid with a large silver Vaio logo in the center.

Opening the laptop reveals a silver interior and a sleek, minimalist design, both of which make the Sony Vaio FW270 the closest to a MacBook Pro you can get in the Windows world.

Despite its 16.4 inch screen, the Vaio FW270 manages to keep both its weight and its footprint closer to a 15 inch system (such as the Vaio FZ180) than a 17 inch one. We felt unencumbered with it in tow on a trip to a coffee shop down the street.

Another way in which the Vaio FW270 reminds us of Apples laptops is the keyboard. Featuring the same widely spaced pebble design found on the MacBook (and, admittedly, earlier Vaio laptops), the Vaio FW270s keyboard makes for very comfortable typing. The touch pad, too, glides smoothly and is easy to use. The only other element on the keyboard deck is a row of media control buttons above the board.

(Unlike the recent trend of touch sensitive media control buttons, these are of the old fashioned click variety, which feels almost retro.) The button on the right, labeled AV Mode, launches an on screen toolbar, which sits at the top of the screen and provides quick access to Sonys proprietary media playing software.

In our review of an earlier FW series laptop, we criticized Sony for placing a "Full HD 1080p" sticker on the wrist rest. To our dismay, the sticker is still in place, even though the 1,600x900 native resolution on the 16.4 inch wide screen LCD display isnt truly 1080p. (Sony has explained the 1080p sticker by saying the system offers "full 1080 HD content when connected to a compatible HDTV.") Nevertheless, the FW270s 16:9 display is great for playing HD content (at 720p), provided you dont mind the screens glossy and somewhat reflective finish.

ACU dishing out iPhone iPod touch to all incoming freshmen

Never heard of Abilene Christian University? Were guessing a wide majority of the general public hasnt either, but the institution is definitely getting its name out there by promising each incoming freshman this fall an iPhone or iPod touch.

Granted, these arent being explicitly marked as "free," but similar to Dukes efforts in years past, ACU plans on using these devices for educational enrichment. Reportedly, the handhelds will enable students to "receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors offices, and check their meal and account balances" -- and thats just for starters.

Palm Pixi

Overall, Palm Pixi is slimmer than both the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre. The phone itself is covered in a rubbery, soft touch material the back actually flexes and snaps off like a piece of Tupperware and the keys are much clickier and more satisfying to type on than the Pres keys. On the back, theres a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, as compared to the Pres 3 megapixel unit. Palm says Palm Pixi is designed for messaging, and see the companys point.

As RIMs BlackBerry discovered a long time ago, the candybar form factor is perfect for messaging, because the keyboard is always exposed (and doesnt have hinges or ridges getting in its way.) Palm Pixi feels comfortable, well balanced, and just about the right size in the hand. Because of the lack of ridges around the edge, the keyboard feels larger, even though it isnt folks with big fingers will still probably find the keys to be too small. Palm Pixi is based on the Qualcomm MSM7627 chipset, which is designed for lower cost smartphones.

Rather than using a separate application and baseband (phone) processor like the Pre does, the MSM7627 unifies both functions in one chip. That makes for slimmer, cheaper, and cooler running phones, but the downside is lower video performance. Because Palm Pixi has a 320 by 400 touch screen as opposed to the Pres 320 by 480 display, many of the standard WebOS interface items are a little bit compressed. Theyre well designed, though, so you dont notice until someone points out to you that the buttons on the phone keypad, for instance, are a bit more compressed. The

smaller screen did become noticeable with Web browsing, though you see less of a Web page at a time than you do on the Pre. The interface was just as responsive as the Pres, though, and all the WebOS items were in the same place. Palm ditched the Pres home button in favor of a virtual home button an area right below the screen that lights up in a little white line. It worked just like the Pres home button. Palm Pixi comes with 8GB of built-in storage, but no removable memory. The battery is removable, though.

You can sync it with various PC and Mac apps including iTunes, although Palm has been having a bit of a cat and mouse game with Apple over that one. Although Palm Pixis back doesnt work with Palms Touchstone inductive charger, Palm will separately sell six "artist backs" that do work with the Touchstone each one was designed by a different California based artist. Palm Pixi has GPS and stereo Bluetooth, but not Wi-Fi, unfortunately. Palm dodged the question of why it left out the Wi-Fi, but they implied it was a cost consideration. Instead of Wi-Fi, Palm Pixi connects using Sprints EVDO Rev A network (or it roams on Verizons network when Sprints network isnt available.)

Today, while checking my email I noticed an about.me weekly update regarding the people that had viewed my page, as well as other viewer activity. Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm is a comfortably sized candy bar style phone at 4.9 by 2 by .6 inches (HWD) and 3.5 ounces, coated in a soft touch black or white plastic. Consumer Cellular uses AT&ampTs physical network, but charges less than the major carriers do per minute for light users (though they dont offer free nights and weekends.) But heres the design flaw. Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm has a "panic button" on the back that calls a user programmed number if you press it three times. The panic button is exactly where it put my index finger when Im holding the phone up to my ear. This is very annoying. Now, not everyone puts their finger in that location.

Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm is a decent voice phone, but I like its stablemate the PhoneEasy 410gsm better. Like the 410gsm, Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm gets better reception and sounds better than AT&ampTs other simple phone, the Pantech Breeze. But Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm sounded a bit muddier, both on receive and transmit, than the 410 it was still acceptable, just not as good as its cousin.

The speakerphone was loud but sounded hollow. Like the 410gsm, Doro PhoneEasy 345gsm has a powerful vibrate mode and comes with 20 ringtones, including classical music and traditional phone rings. It connected with my Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth headset without a problem.

Researcher will enable hackers to take over millions of home routers

Seismics Craig Heffner claims that he got a tool that can hack "millions" of gateways using a new spin on the age old DNS rebinding vulnerability, and plans to release it into the wild at the Black Hat 2010 conference next week.

He has already tested his hack on thirty different models, of which more than half were vulnerable, including two versions of the ubiquitous Linksys WRT54G and devices running certain DD-WRT and OpenWRT Linux-based firmware. To combat the hack, the usual precautions apply for the love of Mitnick, change your default password but Heffner believes the only real fix will come by prodding manufacturers into action.

Catch the London Underground with Google Maps

Today, Google Maps added public transport directions for London within Google Maps, including Google Maps for mobile on iOS, Blackberry, and Android-powered devices. Now, whether you live in London or are just visiting, you can get public transport directions on your mobile device.


Public transport directions in Google Maps for Android

Google Maps for mobile uses your current location to determine the best trip to your destination. Just search for your destination location, select it on the map and choose the “Directions” option. The suggested trips will be based on your location by default, and provide you multiple alternatives whenever possible.

If you’re using an Android-powered device, you can also get public transport directions with Transit Navigation (Beta) in Google Maps. With this feature, you’ll get alerts when it’s time to get off the bus or train at your destination or to make a transfer. We hope that public transport directions in London make getting around town more convenient!

Begini ceritanya. Ini entah beneran atau hanya sbatas pikiran/halusinasi yg terlintas sementara dan sodara² ATAU lainnya, (ajak kluarga si ATAU sekampung dimari).
Kali ini gw memulai hubungan asmara lagi. Utk yg satu ini agak jaoh patokan umur gw yg menjulang tinggi (wuih gunung kalee). Yap pacar gw itu anak SMA gan (gluduk bunyi petir). Bayangin gw grade 05 pacaran ama anak kelas 2 SMA dan muka sok imut gw pasti keliatan bapak² banget ampooooon.

Hmn dlm hubungan ini tidak banyak acara "GOTONGROYONG" nya sih. Hanya bermodal chat dan wtw (wall to wall) dan kita jadian. (hah?smudah itu?). Ya ga lah gan, dlm hal urusan cinta gw radaan susah. Ya itu dia susah jatuh cinta tapi kalo ada yg iklas mencintai gw ga ada salahnya jga gw terima :).

Tidak banyak memakan waktu dalam pelestarian sampai jadian kami pacaran. (pelestarian hutan maksudnya?). Seminggu kalo ga salah, ah lupa hitung gw. Palm Pre launching with Google Search Google Maps and YouTube

As mobile technology geeks, were really excited to see a new smartphone launch from our friends at Palm. Palm Pre phones webOS works great with Google Search, Google Maps, and YouTube, which are built into the device. You can also easily sync your Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts to Palm Pre.

Were big fans of Palm Pre phones universal search feature. Just start typing a query from the home screen (no need to launch the browser). If your query doesn’t match any contact info or the name of an application on your phone, you’ll be prompted to search either the web with Google, local places on Google Maps, articles on Wikipedia, or Twitter.



Whats neat about launching Google Maps in this way is that it will use your location to conduct a search for nearby businesses and points of interest (if you choose to allow Location Services, of course). Similar to some other mobile phones, Google Maps is built into Palm Pre phones operating system -- youll notice a Google Maps icon amongst the phones built-in applications. However, the implementation of Google Maps on Palm Pre is actually very different from how we built Maps on platforms like Android or BlackBerry. Palm is calling its operating system webOS for good reason -- all applications running on webOS leverage a WebKit-based rendering engine for content, which made it easy to port Google Maps to the platform. You can use familiar Google Maps features such as My Location, local search, driving directions, and traffic.



Palm Pre also includes a YouTube application that Palm built using Palm’s Native application MoJo SDK, and much like a web app, it uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. YouTube on Palm Pre makes it easy to watch your favorite videos. When you play a video, it auto-rotates to landscape orientation to take full advantage of the phones screen.



Palm Pre wouldnt be complete without productivity functions and were happy to report that Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts work well on the device. Simply enter your account name and password and Palm Pre will sync your email, calendar events, and contacts to the device. Palm Pre supports the IMAP IDLE protocol so you can enjoy push Gmail.

This is just the beginning for Google applications on Palm Pre. The good news is that since our applications are built using web standards along with Palms MoJo SDK, we can iterate quickly and provide new functionality, often without requiring you to install anything new. We look forward to rolling out new features for our mobile applications at a rapid clip.

All athletes attending the 2014 Winter Olympics will be awarded with a Samsung Galaxy Note3

The 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi will bring together some of the world’s finest athletes and while not all of them will be able to go home with a medal, there will be one trophy that theyll all bring - a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Pantech C790 Aladdin AT T

Pantech C790 Aladdin (AT&T) has been recently approved by the Bluetooth SIG, so it might not be long until AT&T’s upcoming messaging phones is the Pantech C790, also called Pantech Aladdin – perhaps after Disney’s beloved character?

Like other Pantech phones released by AT&T (the Matrix Pro, for example), the Pantech C790 has both an alphanumeric and a QWERTY keyboard.

The Bluetooth SIG’s image of the phone is far from being great, so I had to add some brightness to it.

Pantech C790 Aladdin (AT&T) features include :

quad-band GSM
tri-band HSDPA connectivity
AGPS
Bluetooth
threaded SMS
1.3MP camera
MicroSD card support.

Postmortem Java App Engine outage July 14 2011

Summary

Last week, we posted about a limited outage on July 14, 2011. Now that our internal postmortem is complete, we thought you would also like to get more detail about what went wrong and what we are going to do to ensure this doesnt happen again.

Root Cause and Analysis

The main lesson learned is to improve our live traffic testing as a relatively minor bug triggered a corner case for some of our customers. The bug was in a new release of the infrastructure in the App Engine Java execution environment. During development, testing, and qualification, this bug was essentially hidden from view because it only manifested itself under specific load patterns. During the outage, requests to affected applications would fail with errors when traffic was routed to affected instances. Application logs would have shown affected instances experienced high latency, error rates, or were not reachable from the Internet. This could have been caught by letting the live traffic testing run longer.

In order for live traffic testing to work properly, we need to improve our monitoring as well. In this case, having more points from which to do black box monitoring would have helped immensely. We are currently working on much broader monitoring for App Engine and will be integrating more extensive black box testing in upcoming quarters.

Once again, we’d like to point out that we could have done a much better job of communicating issues to all of you. While we strive to strike a balance between letting you know about major issues and not bothering you about the day-to-day operations; we clearly should have communicated this incident to you sooner. Rest assured you’ll be better informed of issues in the future.

Timeline

July 14, 2011 - 11:30 AM US/Pacific - The new Java execution environment is released to production.

July 14, 2011 - 5:00-6:00 PM US/Pacific - The previously scheduled Master/Slave read-only maintenance period occurred.

July 14, 2011 - 8:00-9:30 PM US/Pacific - Monitoring shows error rates and latency for Java applications using the Master/Slave datastore are slowly increasing across the entire system. Investigation reveals that the new Java execution environment is malfunctioning.

July 14, 2011 - 9:30 PM US/Pacific - Rollback of the Java execution environment to the previous version begins. Latency and error rates begin to fall.

July 14, 2011 - 11:30 PM US/Pacific - Rollback of the Java execution environment to the previous version completes. Java Master/Slave applications are functioning normally.

Remediation

• Faster notification on our status site and downtime-notify mailing list


• More live traffic stress tests for new releases


• Better black box monitoring to detect small impacts more quickly

[Edit] Clarification: no HR datastore apps were affected. Overall, the outage resulted in a 1.9% error rate, affecting approximately 0.005% of all App Engine traffic at peak.
